NHRC Urges Center For Report on Neurodevelopmental Disorders Following Petition

After persistent effort by Human Rights’ Activist, Petitioner, and Lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, National Human Rights Commision has taken into account the invisible suffering of neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adults. It has prompted the Center to produce a report within 6 weeks to analyse what actions are being taken. The directive was issued by NHRC on 31st January 2024.

Shri Radhakanta Tripathy also asked for revamping existing provisions for people with disabilities to accommodate people living with neurodevelopmental disorders through proper amends. He not only summarised challenges of learning disabilities like Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and ADHD, but also highlighted limited treatment options present in the country. He argued for empowerment and a life of dignity for neurodevelopmental patients.

Dyspraxia also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), dyspraxia affects motor coordination and planning, making it challenging for individuals to perform coordinated movements and tasks.

Dyslexia is a common learning disorder that affects reading, spelling, and writing. Individuals with dyslexia may have difficulty recognizing and decoding words, leading to challenges in reading fluently.

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder related to mathematical abilities. Individuals with dyscalculia may have difficulty understanding and manipulating numbers, as well as solving mathematical problems.

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects writing abilities. Individuals with dysgraphia may struggle with handwriting, spelling, and organizing thoughts on paper.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It can impact academic performance, social interactions, and daily functioning.

The report is to be produced by the Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Union Health Secretary and Ministry of Social Justice. Furthermore, the directive provides guidelines to research division. Collection of data and information to quantify the burden of these diseases will be commissioned under NHRC directive.

Shri Radhakanta Tripathy has often spoken up for the rights of vulnerable during his professional career and he is the first one to raise voice for the people living with learning disabilities in front of NHRC.
